Bennett, R. E. (2011, Feb.). Formative assessment: A critical review. Assessment in Education: Principles, Policy, & Practice, 18, 5-25.
Bennett addresses six issues related to formative assessment practices in the classroom. These issues include the following: 1) the definition of formative assessment; 2) the claims commonly made for its effectiveness; 3) the limited attention given to domain considerations; 4) the lack of measurement principles; 5) the needed teacher supports and professional development; and 6) the impact of the larger educational system. Bennett concludes that considerably more research is needed to better understand formative assessment conceptually and to effectively implement formative assessment practices in the classroom.
