Popham, J. (2011). Classroom assessment: What teachers need to know (6th ed.). Boston: Allyn & Bacon.
This book is written to help teachers learn to use assessments to improve their teaching practices and to better support student learning in the classroom. Popham address various assessment issues including reliability and validity, test bias, and timely topics related to policies of NCLB such as making sense out of standardized test scores and appropriate test-prep practice. The author also describes how to improve teacher-developed assessments and how to determine what to assess and how to assess it. Individual assessment types further explored include selected- and constructed-response tests, performance assessment, portfolio assessment, and affective assessment. New additions to the 6th edition include guidance for effective communication with parents about assessment results and critical thinking exercises for students.
