Brookhart’s book provides tools, tips, and implementation steps for using formative assessment with students at any grade level and in any academic subject. The book is divided into three parts. The first section, Rationale and Planning, addresses definitions of formative assessment, how it works in classrooms, creating formative assessment tools. The second section, Teacher Tools, helps teachers understand how to create classroom assignments, give students feedback that helps them further their learning, and design formative assessments for specific student groups. The third section, Student Tools, offers tools for students to use when an assessment is given, during instruction, during individual or group work, and before/after summative assessments. All tools included in the book are accompanies by clear instructions and suggestions for variations and next steps.
