Wolf, Herman, and Dietel highlight five priorities for improving the validity of assessment system for English Language Learners (ELLs). They recommend the following: 1) English language proficiency standards and assessment; 2) ELL classification and reclassification; 3) Content assessments for ELL students; 4) ELL test accommodations; and 5) Teacher capacity and ELL students’ opportunity to learn. The authors describe each of these priorities and include a discussion of how to prioritize each and the needed resources. Wolf and colleagues conclude with a call to action for educators to actively work to close the ELL performance gap.
