This report summarizes presentations and discussions that took place at a research symposium on through-course summative assessments, meaning summative assessments given periodically throughout the school year. Jerald and colleagues present the benefits of through-course assessments and challenges to design, development, and implementation. They also describe how through-course design is incorporated in Race to the Top Assessment Program applications. Presentation topics include validation and theory of action, learning progressions, reliability, analyzing student growth, and scaling, linking, and reporting test results. Jerald and colleagues conclude by discussing key issues and topics for future research. The report also includes an appendix listing research papers and resources for additional information on through-course summative assessments.
