The “Handbook of Formative Assessment”, edited by Heidi L. Andrade and Gregory J. Cizek, is a comprehensive text providing both scholarly and practical knowledge on formative assessment (FA). The first section of the handbook describes the foundations of FA including the history, research literature, and a new theory of FA. The next section focuses on FA methods and practice exploring numerous topics including peer feedback, new technology, adapting formative assessment strategies for diverse student populations, and effective professional development to enhance teachers' FA skills. The final section addresses challenges associated with FA and future directions for FA research and practice. All chapters are written by leading scholars and practitioners in the field.
