After introducing research and evaluation and providing a step-by-step explanation of how to conduct a literature review, Mertens discusses a variety of approaches to systematic inquiry including experimental and quasi-experimental research, causal comparative and correlational research, survey research, qualitative methods, and mixed-methods designs. Additional chapter topics include sampling, data collection and analysis, interpretation, and reporting. There is also an appendix with detailed information on how to write an effective research proposal. Throughout the book, the author includes practical examples from specific research studies and step-by-step processes for conducting different types of research.
